Sarah Swan feeling inspired in Verona, Italy
Sarah Swan feeling inspired in Verona, Italy.
Verona is the city where William Shakespeare based one of his two most famous plays set in Verona, ‘ Romeo & Juliet’. The inspiration for the play was a rivalry of two noble families.
it is for the wonderful and tragic love story between Romeo and Juliet that the city is best known. It’s also why Verona is called “the city of love.” Very apt this St. Valentines weekend.
It is unknown if Shakespeare ever visited Verona or Italy, but his plays have lured many visitors to Verona and surrounding cities. The city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its urban structure and architecture.
Verona was founded by an ancient tribe ( possibly the Euganei or Raeti ) and was later occupied by Gallic Cenomani. It became a Roman colony in 89 BC and rapidly rose in importance because it was at a junction of main roads between Italy and the North of Europe. Verona is one of the richest cities in Northern Italy with substantial Roman remains, the most breathtaking of these is the amphitheatre, It is the 3rd largest surviving Roman amphitheatre and it is still used for opera and other events.
Verona, a city of light and colour, Italy and travel in general, has inspired Sarah and her work for many years. This inspiration is the basis of her fine collection of scarves which catalogues her travels.
